2018 BIM Fisheries Management Chart Released

BIM Fisheries Management Chart, Map, 2018

The 2018 edition of the Bord Iascaigh Mhara/Irish Sea Fisheries Board (BIM) Irish Fisheries Management Chart was released last week at the Irish Skipper Exhibition in Galway. Published annually the chart is aimed at fishermen with vessels over 12m. It is a one-sheet document made up of a series of maps and charts. In summary, its aim is to show fishermen, where they can fish, what they can fish for and what gear they have to use.

The chart consists of one main map of the Irish 200-mile fishing area with ICES zones and a catch reporting grid superimposed. The main map also shows some closures and areas with restrictions. The main map is surrounded by a series of smaller maps to illustrate the NEAFC Area, Fishing rights in the 6-12 Mile zone, Fishing Effort Zones and Herring/Mackerel Restrictions. The sheet also has a series of charts including one on Minimum Conservation Reference Sizes (MCRS), charts on demersal fisheries subject to the landing obligation and de minimis exemptions and a series of charts on Technical Conservation Measures. Finally, the sheet also has a chart on Irish Fish Quotas for 2018.

The Fisheries Management Chart is produced annually for BIM by La Tene Maps. The company is one of Europe’s biggest publishers of maps on marine subjects in Europe. In Ireland, the company publishes maps on Aquaculture, Fisheries, Fish Processing, Oil and Gas Exploration, and Marine Renewables.
