North America – Offshore Wind Projects Map (5th edition)

The 2018 edition of the “North America – Offshore Wind Projects” map has been released. This map shows all the Offshore Wind Projects in the United States of America and Canada including the Great Lakes. The map has a large inset of the East coast of America and one for the Hawaiian Islands. For these areas, the map shows for federal waters all the current lease, unsolicited lease, and designated areas for wind farming and in some federal-state waters the results of the request for nominations. The above areas are shown together with the lease name, the operator or applicant, and the generating capacity. For inshore waters under state control, we show the projects only by symbol as they tend to be much smaller. Generally, the color of the symbol indicates the status of the projects. Green indicates a proposed project that waits for consent, grey is used for projects that are already consented and black for projects that are built. There is a special symbol for floating wind projects. The map gives a good overview of the North American Industry.

John Coleman, chief executive of La Tene Maps speaking on the release of the map said “This is our 5th edition of this map in about 10 years. In the early years, a lot of time was spent in getting areas nominated and having auctions for lease areas. In the past two years, the leaseholders are getting on with their own studies and getting ready to submit for construction planning. Whilst the development of the US has been slow it looks poised for a rapid development from now on. In Canada, there has not been the same interest. A moratorium by the Ontario Government does not help. The rapid growth in floating wind technologies should see a growth in interest in the west coast and deeper water areas. In the Great Lakes area, the first wind farm is likely to be the Icebreaker project on the US side of Lake Erie”.

The map was released at the International Partnering Forum, in Princeton, New Jersey, USA April 2-6th, 2018 and available free from the RenewableUK stand. Copies of the map will be available free at various renewable energy conferences and exhibitions during 2018 and 2019. The “North America – Offshore Wind Projects” is also available for purchase in a variety of formats from the website www.latenemaps.com.
